Only three times in Genesis 1 do we find the expression that God "created" ( Genesis 1:1; 1:21; 1:27 ). Each time, this creation of God points to something that wasn't there before, even in a similar form.
In verse 1 God creates the heavens and the earth. This is the beginning of matter . Out of nothing, God brings into existence something that was not there before.
In verse 21 God creates the animals (aquatic animals and birds). This is the beginning of animal life , one could also say the beginning of the soul ("living beings" literally means "living souls"). Animals have a soul, not an immortal one, but they do have a soul. You can feel and move independently.
In verse 27 God creates man. This is the beginning of human life and with it the beginning of the spirit which animals do not possess. Man is a rational being who speaks and understands language from the beginning ("And God spoke to them ").
This creation of God also shows every human creation within its limits. God has done something here that no man can do. No one can make something existent out of non-existence. No man can bring dead matter to life. And no human is able to bridge the gap between animal and human life. And what man cannot create, evolution cannot create either.
How surpassing is the creative power of God! And how easy everything becomes when you believe in the Creator.
